"Sunday Morning"

Sunday morning for this pastor's kid growing up was a cause of angst and frustration. I could not stand the idea of going to church on a Sunday morning. Alas, being the son of the preacher behind the pulpit, dodging did not come without its consequences as I hit my teen years. Perhaps I will talk about that some day.

Fast forward through life and I look at Sunday mornings differently now. This "PK", this prodigal son, now an adult loves Sunday mornings. I've been thankful in life that God never gave up on me.

This painting, for me, depicts feeling of perhaps "the outsider" looking in, as other "good people" attend service on a Sunday morning. She's all dressed up for church but perhaps feels like "the woman at the well" in John chapter 4. Or maybe she's just late for church. Or maybe she's waiting for someone or something. Every viewer sees a painting differently. This painting was created about a year ago but touched up recently following a strange illness.

For me, I am grateful when Sunday mornings come around again. For a long time, starting in November of 2023, I started experiencing flu like symptoms and short periods of fevers that would come and go. The micro-flus as I called them would last sometimes several hours, sometimes just an hour, and then leave. They would be gone and come back. This occurred over the course of a month. I was finally hospitalized in December for a week as I had a team of doctors attempt to understand what was causing these sporadic fevers. I was told pneumonia was part of the challenge, but never did find an answer. After working with a disease specialist (think "House, MD" without the drama), the fevers finally left in the middle of February. My last recorded fever was February 20th. As someone who struggles with multiple sclerosis, this created a complex challenge to my health as I recovered.

Starting this year, I started to get back into painting and one of the first ones I focused on was "Sunday Morning." I'm grateful I no longer need to isolate and that I can go to church on Sunday mornings, but that wasn't why I painted this one. For now, I will let the viewer decide the exact story behind the painting. "Sunday morning" is available in print on my store page, and also comes in blankets, throw pillows, and much more. I hope you enjoy this painting as much as I do!

Knowing the history of an art piece makes it so much more meaningful. Thanks for sharing that story. Now when I see the painting I remember how your life changed as you met God.
