"The Holiday"

Updated: Jun 16, 2025

"The Holiday" is a painting that inspires a great deal of reflection and imagination. Certainly, the attached scripture adds weight to such a claim. But even without the famous verse from Song of Songs, the viewer can get lost in a daydream as they conclude what exactly, the painting means to them. I have said often, and it bears repeating here, that each viewer can potentially see a different story than another person when they look upon an art piece. The same is true for this beautiful selection for today's blog. However, before I continue on with what someone may see, let me add some design specifics to this favorite still-life of mine.

"The Holiday" was composed over a period of three days in April of 2023. This painting was developed on an 18 by 24-inch canvas and primed with dark lavender acrylic and then covered in assorted oils. I started with a sketch and then moved to a monochromatic painting before finalizing with colors. Light plays through the window of this painting that the viewer can decide the story on.

The composition includes a rose laying on the old antique table, complete with morning coffee for two, an orange and an apple. A viewer can see steam rising from the carafe which holds freshly brewed coffee. The shades are drawn open and light filters through as the sunrise beckons new possibilities. A red and crimson drapery is hanging off the table of this beautiful still life painting.

As mentioned prior, this painting holds much to the imagination without the verse from Song of Solomon chapter 2 verse 10. Perhaps the viewer sees a honeymoon type of scene. Maybe the couple was whisked away to explore the adventures that beckon them. That is only one interpretation. I am sure you have a few ideas as well as to what the story is with this particular scene. But when we add the attached verse, this becomes something even more intriguing. Soon, I will offer up what exactly this painting and its attached verse mean to me, the artist, but for now, I enjoy a little mystery with this specific still-life.

If you have some ideas of your own, you are welcome to share them as well :) In the meantime, I hope "The Holiday" inspires you and gives you joy in your day. This painting is now available in print through my web site. Thank you for taking an interest in my artwork.
